Undergraduate: IELTS 7.5, with EAPP as a safety net

All international students prove English proficiency with an exam or an English Proficiency Waiver Request. If your native language is not English and you study in a non-English-speaking country, take the Duolingo English Test, IELTS or TOEFL (code 2928). The recommended scores are Duolingo 130, IELTS 7.5 and TOEFL 100 on the former scale or 5 on the new one. Rochester reviews each sitting separately: it does not superscore or accept TOEFL MyBest. If cost is a barrier to sending official scores, your school counsellor may send a copy. See international students.

Applicants below these ranges are still encouraged to apply. If Rochester judges that you would benefit from support, you may be admitted through the English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP), a two-semester program taken alongside your degree courses; you cannot apply to EAPP directly. You can request a waiver if you are a native English speaker or completed at least three years of high school taught mainly in English.

Graduate: program scores and a country-based waiver

Graduate applicants whose native language is not English send official IELTS, TOEFL (including the Home Edition) or Duolingo scores, and scores more than two years old at the application deadline are not valid. The test is waived for native-English-speaking citizens of listed countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Singapore and South Africa, or after three years of full-time, in-person postsecondary study in those countries or the US. India is not on the list. Email graduate admissions to request a waiver. See test requirements.

Electrical and Computer Engineering recommends TOEFL 5.0 (100 on the legacy scale), IELTS 7.5 or Duolingo 120. It accepts the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition but not IELTS Indicator or TOEFL ITP Plus. See ECE applying. Simon Business School accepts TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo and waives the test after three or more academic years of post-secondary study taught solely in English, ending in a degree from an English-medium institution. See Simon standardized tests.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Rochester sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Rochester undergraduate international students page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar. To see where you stand now, take a timed IELTS mock test.
