UAL exempts nationals of UKVI majority English-speaking countries who completed full secondary education there, some UK residents, and holders of an English-taught degree, valid for three years, if the UAL course is at least RQF level 6. Its degree list covers UK, US, Australian, New Zealand, South African and Canadian degrees only, with grades rising by level, for example a UK 2:2 for 6.0 and a 2:1 for 7.0.

UAL accepts alternative school qualifications only from nationals of majority English-speaking countries or applicants who need no Student visa. No Indian Class XII, Pakistani or Nigerian school-English route is listed, so most applicants from those countries will need a test.

UAL's pre-sessional entry page, updated 1 April 2026, runs 7-week and 12-week courses. To study pre-sessional on a Student visa you need a SELT: IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic for UKVI, Trinity ISE taken in the UK, LanguageCert Academic SELT or PSI Skills for English SELT. Online or visitor-visa students can also use IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or the Oxford Test of English.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UAL programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
