UW's Duolingo rules

First-year applicants must send official scores, including subscores, directly from the testing agency to UW. The UW does not superscore English tests. If you test after the 15 November deadline but by 31 December, list UW as a score recipient when you register.

For graduate study, scores are valid for two years and must be valid on the date you submit the application, and no offer can be made before official scores arrive. Programmes decide whether they accept DET, and the policy notes that DET emphasises short, general-use tasks while TOEFL and IELTS assess deeper academic literacy. The policy lists DET as an at-home test.

For comparison, the first-year page sets IELTS at 6.0, and the graduate policy sets Academic IELTS at 6.5 minimum and 7.0 or higher recommended.

If your Duolingo score is below UW's level

UW does not offer conditional admission to first-year applicants, and those without a qualifying score by 31 December are not considered. The alternative is a B average in high-school English with SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 580 or ACT English 22. Graduate students admitted between the minimum and recommended scores must complete one or two Academic English Program courses, starting in their first quarter, at extra cost.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UW programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
