What IELTS score do you need for the University of Winchester?

These course pages were read on 9 October 2026. Winchester's research degree admissions policy (May 2023) asks for "an average score of 6.5 IELTS with at least 7.0 for written English".

Winchester's comparison table accepts India Standard XII at 70% in English Language on the first attempt, "Not accepted from Punjab and Haryana boards", dated no earlier than two years before an undergraduate start or five years before a postgraduate start. It adds that if you need visa sponsorship the listed qualifications "may not be sufficient for visa purposes", so contact admissions first. Its international entry requirements page sends Indian and Nigerian applicants to the English page for language rules.

Winchester's international entry page says Norwegian and US students no longer need to pay a tuition fee deposit before securing a CAS; the deposit for other countries is not stated there. A Winchester pre-sessional English course was not described on the pages read.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Winchester programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
