Wuppertal English requirements by programme
From the Computer Simulation in Science requirements page, the Smart Materials and Systems page and the Applied Economics page.
| Programme | IELTS | Other proof on the page |
|---|---|---|
| M.Sc. Computer Simulation in Science (CSiS) | 6.0, Academic module | TOEFL iBT 79, TOEFL Essentials 8.0, PTE Academic 67, Cambridge 173 or B2 First and above, telc B2/C1 university, NULTE B2 |
| Smart Materials and Systems (master's) | 6.0 | TOEFL iBT 79, Cambridge CAE, PTE 67, telc B2, UNIcert II, NULTE B2 |
| M.Sc. Applied Economics | Named, no band stated (C1 required) | TOEFL or Cambridge, as equivalent recognised examinations |
Validity and waivers
For CSiS, the certificate must not be older than two years at the time of enrolment. The page says only bachelor's graduates from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA do not need a B2 certificate, and that all other bachelor's graduates must provide one even if their programme was taught in English. German citizens may use their Abitur.
The Smart Materials and Systems page waives the certificate if your bachelor's programme was taught in English. The Applied Economics page waives English proof if the bachelor's programme required for admission was taught entirely in English.

CSiS entry requirements and how to check
English is only one part of CSiS entry. The page also asks for at least 180 ECTS over six semesters, a grade of at least 3.0 in the German system (uni-assist calculates the official figure), 8 ECTS of programming knowledge, and 24 ECTS in one specialisation field. Applicants with insufficient bachelor's knowledge for a specialisation may be admitted conditionally.
Because the rules on exemptions differ between the three programmes, read the page for your own programme rather than a neighbour's.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Wuppertal programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Wuppertal publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
