UTRGV Duolingo minimums by level
From the 2025-2026 undergraduate catalog and Graduate Admissions' English proficiency exam page.
| Level or programme | Duolingo minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 95 | Catalog minimum score |
| Graduate | 105 | A Zoom or Skype interview may be required |
How UTRGV handles Duolingo scores
The undergraduate catalog says scores must be sent directly from the testing service. Graduate Admissions accepts only official scores received directly from the testing agency or UTRGV's Testing Center, and warns that scores can take 8 to 10 weeks to arrive.
Graduate test scores are valid for two years; older scores mean retaking the exam. The undergraduate catalog gives no Duolingo validity period.
For comparison, the same sources set IELTS at 6 for undergraduates and 6.5 for graduate study.

If your Duolingo score is below UTRGV's level
Undergraduates are exempt after completing the highest ESL Advanced Level course through the UTRGV Language Institute. Graduate applicants are exempt after completing the Advanced Level of the Intensive Program in UTRGV's English Language Programs, with a certificate of completion.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UTRGV programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
