Validity, sending and teaching assistants
Virginia Tech only accepts results from a test taken within the past two years. If self-reported scores are used for review, official reports must come directly from the testing organisation once you are admitted and accept your offer.
The Graduate School expects prospective graduate teaching assistants to have a TOEFL Speaking score of 5 or more; its page does not give a Duolingo route for this.

If your score is lower
If you meet the other admission requirements but not the English one, Virginia Tech encourages you to enrol in its Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI). Once you complete the programme you are offered admission as a regular degree-seeking student.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Virginia Tech programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
