WIUT IELTS and TOEFL minimums

From WIUT's Foundation page, its MA in Learning and Teaching page and its Admissions Policy version 3.2, dated 23 October 2024. WIUT awards University of Westminster validated programmes. The pages read do not give a bachelor's IELTS figure, so none is stated here.

Certificate in International Foundation Studies6.0 overall, Writing 5.0TOEFL iBT 78 (Writing 17); GCSE or IGCSE English grade C
MA in Learning and Teaching (TESOL pathway)6.5 overall, Writing 6.0TOEFL iBT 88 (Writing 21); first or second degree taught in English

Alternatives to an IELTS score

For the Foundation, the page accepts GCSE or IGCSE English at grade C or above, or the required pass level on the WIUT Basic English for Academic Purpose module at Level 2 of its Pre-Foundation course. For the MA, it accepts a first or second degree taught and assessed in English, or the required pass on WIUT's Preparatory Language Course for postgraduate study.

WIUT accepts TOEFL iBT taken in person, including TOEFL MyBest Scores. The TOEFL Home Edition is not accepted for entry to WIUT degree programmes. The policy also says scholarships are offered on IELTS performance and a WIUT maths entrance exam, weighted 60% IELTS and 40% maths.

Preparatory Language Course for master's applicants

WIUT's Preparatory Language Course for the Master's degree asks IELTS 5.5 overall with at least 5.5 in Writing to enter. It lasts two months, with classes three times a week on the WIUT campus. The page says completing it successfully means no need to retake IELTS or an equivalent test for WIUT master's programmes, and its results are valid for postgraduate entry in 2026-2027.

Other standard admissions checks may still apply, so confirm with the admissions office which route your chosen master's accepts.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your WIUT programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
