Late, absent or turned away: what the rules say
Pearson's test centre rules say you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your test and sign in at reception. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to take the test and you lose your test fee. The same applies if your ID is invalid or does not match your booking: Pearson says it cannot refund the fee when you are turned away for an invalid ID (booking help).
Leaving partway through counts the same way. The Test Taker Handbook says you are not allowed to leave before the test finishes, and if you do you lose the fee and your scores are not provided.
| Situation | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| You arrive late | Not allowed to sit the test; fee lost | Test centre rules |
| You do not turn up | Fee lost, unless an emergency reschedule is accepted | Cancellation policy |
| ID expired or details do not match | Turned away; no refund | Booking help |
| You leave before the end | Fee lost; no scores released | Test Taker Handbook |
| Illness or family emergency | Emergency reschedule form, at Pearson's discretion | Cancellation policy |
The emergency reschedule form
If illness or a family emergency stops you attending, Pearson may let you reschedule free of charge. Fill in the Request Emergency Reschedule form as soon as you know, with your evidence attached. The cancellation policy, last updated 17 September 2026, says the form can be submitted up to 14 full calendar days before the test date and must be submitted no later than 72 hours after your appointment.
Acceptance of evidence is at Pearson's discretion. There is no automatic right to rebook or to a refund for medical or family reasons, and Pearson contacts you if it needs more information.
If you sit the test while unwell instead, the handbook says no score adjustment is made for unexpected illness or other events at the time of the test.

If you know in advance that you cannot go
Cancelling early always beats not turning up. Refunds depend on how far away the test is when you cancel (refund policy):
| When you cancel | Refund of the test fee |
|---|---|
| More than 14 full calendar days before | 100% |
| Between 14 and 7 full calendar days before | 50% |
| 7 calendar days or fewer before | None |
Rescheduling instead
Rescheduling is free while more than 14 full calendar days remain, up to six times for one appointment. With 14 days or fewer left, the Reschedule button disappears from your myPTE dashboard and you must cancel and book a new test (cancellation policy). Full detail is in PTE reschedule, cancel and refund rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a refund if I miss my PTE test?+
Not normally. A missed or late appointment loses the fee. The emergency reschedule form can lead to a free reschedule at Pearson's discretion, but Pearson says there is no automatic right to a refund.
Is there a grace period if I am late for PTE?+
Pearson does not publish one. Its rules say arrive at least 30 minutes early, and late arrivals are not allowed to take the test.
What is the deadline for the PTE emergency reschedule form?+
No later than 72 hours after your test appointment, with evidence attached, per Pearson's cancellation policy.
Can I reschedule PTE within 14 days of the test?+
No. Inside 14 full calendar days you can only cancel, under the refund tiers, and book a new test.
Will Pearson adjust my score if I was ill on the day?+
No. The handbook says no score adjustment is made for unexpected illness at the time of the test.
