What happens if you run out of time on a PTE question?

You move on. The Test Taker Handbook says writing tasks have an allotted time, and if you do not answer within it you will be required to move to the next question. Spoken answers stop when the progress bar reaches the end and 'Recording' changes to 'Completed'. Reading and most Listening items share a section clock, and the clock does not stop for an unscheduled break.

Section clocks for Reading and Listening

Part 2, Reading, takes 23–30 minutes and Part 3, Listening, 31–39 minutes (Pearson). Pearson's Score Guide notes that the minimum and maximum section times do not add up to the total because test versions are balanced for length. Time spent on one reading item comes out of the time for the others.

There are no scheduled breaks. The handbook says you can ask for an unscheduled break but Pearson strongly advises against it because the test clock will not stop.

What gets scored

Whatever you said or wrote is scored on its merits. A short answer can still fall below a Form threshold: an essay under 120 words or a Summarize Spoken Text under 40 words scores 0 for Form and gets no points (Score Guide). Keep an eye on the word count as well as the timer.
