Band 8 model answer

I would like to talk about a personal pledge I made roughly three years ago, during my final year at university. At the time, I had fallen into a really terrible routine of burning the candle at both ends, constantly pulling all-nighters to finish assignments and eating convenience food. One evening, after feeling completely drained and coming down with a nasty cold right before exam season, I looked in the mirror and promised myself that I would run a half-marathon within twelve months and genuinely prioritise my health.

Sticking to that commitment was far from straightforward, especially at the beginning. To keep myself accountable, I drew up a structured training schedule on a wall planner in my flat. Even on miserable, rainy winter mornings when the last thing I wanted to do was lace up my trainers, I forced myself out the door. Whenever I felt tempted to throw in the towel, I reminded myself of how awful I had felt during that stressful university period. I also began cooking fresh meals rather than ordering takeaway, which gave me the stamina I needed to build up my endurance week by week.

Ultimately, after about ten months of solid preparation, I crossed the finish line of an official half-marathon in a nearby coastal town. It was an incredibly empowering moment. Achieving that goal gave me a massive boost in self-reliance because it proved that my willpower was stronger than my excuses. Keeping that promise really shifted my mindset, and it has given me lasting confidence whenever I face demanding challenges in my everyday life.

Frequently asked questions

Jot down the initial trigger or bad habit that prompted the personal resolution.

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
