I would like to talk about a tall, solid oak bookshelf that sits in the corner of my bedroom. It has five fairly deep shelves, a rich dark brown finish, and a few minor scratches and dings along the edges that give it a bit of character. It isn't particularly modern or sleek, but it is remarkably sturdy and well made.
I actually picked it up second-hand when I moved into my first flat during university. I found it in a little charity shop down a side street. It was looking slightly unloved at the time, but my flatmate and I managed to carry it home, sand it down, and apply a fresh coat of varnish. Since then, it has moved with me to three different flats, so it has followed me around for quite a few years now.
In terms of what is on it, the top two shelves are dedicated to fiction, mostly classic novels, modern paperbacks, and a few favourite fantasy series that I revisit from time to time. The middle shelf holds heavy reference volumes, like bilingual dictionaries, an old world atlas, and some thick encyclopaedias from my school days. The bottom sections are packed with travel guides, non-fiction biographies, and stacks of notebooks.
I suppose this bookshelf is really special to me because it is more than just storage; it is almost like a timeline of my life and interests. Whenever I glance over at it, I am reminded of different phases I have gone through based on the titles sitting there. Plus, in an age where everything is digital, having a physical collection displayed like that makes my room feel genuinely warm, cosy, and personal.
