I'd like to talk about the time I unexpectedly won first prize in a local photography competition a couple of years ago. It took place in my hometown during an annual arts festival held at the community centre.

To be completely honest, winning was the last thing I anticipated. I had only taken up photography as a casual hobby a few months prior, just taking snapshots with an old second-hand camera during weekend walks. A friend persuaded me to enter one of my landscape photos into the amateur category, but I assumed it was far below the standard of the other entries. I didn't even tell my parents I had submitted it until the morning of the exhibition, simply inviting them along for a pleasant afternoon out.

When we arrived, we were casually browsing the gallery wall when we noticed a blue rosette next to my picture. A few minutes later, the organiser called my name over the loudspeaker to present the award. My mum was completely overwhelmed with joy and actually shed a few tears, while my dad couldn't stop beaming and telling complete strangers that I was his son.

They were immensely proud because they knew I had previously lacked confidence in creative pursuits. Seeing me gain recognition for something I taught myself meant a huge amount to them. They ended up framing the winner's certificate, which still hangs in the hallway at home, and the whole experience gave me a genuine sense of fulfilment and self-belief.
