Band 8 model answer

Band 8265 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I’d like to talk about my close friend and former flatmate, Liam, who is an absolute gadget fanatic. Whenever a new piece of consumer tech hits the market, he is almost invariably one of the first people in the queue to get his hands on it.

Over the years, Liam has spent a small fortune on all sorts of electronic equipment. His flat is practically bursting with high-end devices, ranging from top-of-the-range ultra-wide monitors and noise-cancelling headphones to cutting-edge smart home appliances. For instance, he recently kitted out his entire living room with automated ambient lighting and voice-activated sound systems. On top of that, he upgrades his mobile phone and tablet pretty much every single year, regardless of whether his current models are still functioning perfectly well.

I suppose he makes a significant tech purchase at least once every couple of months. As soon as a manufacturer announces a minor spec upgrade or a sleeker design, he feels an irresistible urge to replace his existing gear. It’s definitely a regular habit rather than an occasional splurge.

As for why he spends so much, to be honest, it’s a mix of professional interest and personal obsession. Liam works as a freelance software developer, so he often justifies these steep expenses by claiming that faster processing speeds and superior displays boost his daily productivity. Having said that, deep down, I think he genuinely gets a buzz out of having the latest state-of-the-art tools before anyone else. He simply loves tinkering with new features, even if the financial outlay seems a bit excessive to the rest of us.
