The Evolution of Chocolate
Archaeological findings at Cerro Blanco show that cacao was prepared as a beverage as early as 1 BC. Rather than consuming it sweet, ancient societies mixed cacao with spices, especially 2, to counteract the bitterness. The drink held significant social value and was traditionally served during 3 to unite couples. Over time, cacao beans became a recognised medium of trade and were used as 4. When cacao first reached Europe, it was stocked in 5 due to its supposed medicinal properties. The industry was later transformed by the introduction of an industrial 6, allowing for the mass production of solid chocolate bars.
