1

Do you know how to play chess?

Yes, I do, although I wouldn't call myself an expert by any stretch. I know the basic rules and how all the pieces move, so I can hold my own in a casual match. I usually play a quick game against a friend on my mobile phone when I'm commuting.

2

Did you learn how to play chess as a child?

Yes, my granddad actually taught me the ropes when I was about eight years old. We used to sit in his living room on Sunday afternoons with this lovely wooden set he owned. He was remarkably patient with me, even though I lost every single match.

3

Do you prefer playing chess online or on a physical board?

Definitely on a traditional board. There's something much more satisfying about picking up the pieces and hearing that tactile clack on the wood. Playing on a screen is convenient, sure, but sitting opposite a real person just feels far more engaging and social.

4

Is chess popular in your country?

I'd say it has a dedicated following, but it's not mainstream like football or cricket. You do see people playing in public parks or local community centres, especially older generations, and there's been a bit of a revival recently among younger people who play on digital apps.

5

Do you think children should be taught chess at school?

Absolutely, yes. It's brilliant for developing strategic thinking and concentration. Unlike many modern video games, chess forces you to slow down, plan several moves ahead, and deal with setbacks. I reckon it teaches patience in a way few other games can manage.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
