Languages: questions and Band 8 answers
The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 4 questions about languages in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

How many languages can you speak?
I currently speak two languages fluently: my mother tongue, Mandarin, and English. I have been studying English since primary school, which has allowed me to reach a professional level. Recently, I have also started dabbling in Spanish because I find the cadence of the language quite beautiful.
How useful will English be to you in your future?
It is absolutely vital for my career prospects. Since I aim to work in international marketing, being able to communicate with global clients in a common language is essential. Without a solid grasp of English, I would struggle to access the latest industry research and networking opportunities worldwide.
What do you remember about learning languages at school?
My most vivid memory is the grammar drills we had to complete every single morning. They were incredibly monotonous, but I suppose they provided me with a strong foundation in syntax. We also had to recite poetry, which helped me improve my pronunciation and confidence in speaking aloud.
What do you think would be the hardest language for you to learn?
Learning Arabic would be a monumental challenge for me. The complex script and the entirely different phonetic system seem quite intimidating to a native speaker of a non-related language. I think I would struggle significantly with the various dialects and the intricate grammatical structures involved in daily conversation.
