Sleep: questions and Band 8 answers
The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 6 questions about sleep in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.
Sample answers
How many hours do you usually sleep at night?
I generally manage to get about seven hours of shut-eye each night. It is the perfect amount for me to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle my professional responsibilities without needing an excessive amount of caffeine throughout the morning.
Can you sleep well if you are in a noisy environment?
Actually, I am a very light sleeper, so any background noise usually keeps me wide awake. I find it nearly impossible to drift off unless the room is completely silent, which is why I always travel with a pair of high-quality earplugs.
Are your weekdays and weekends different?
My sleep patterns shift quite significantly depending on the day. During the working week, I am strictly disciplined with my bedtime to maintain productivity, but I tend to indulge in a bit of a lie-in on Saturdays and Sundays to recover my energy.
What do you do if you can't get to sleep at night? Why?
When I find myself tossing and turning, I usually reach for a physical book rather than my phone. Staring at a screen just keeps my brain stimulated, whereas reading something gentle helps me feel drowsy and eases me back into a peaceful state.
Do you ever remember the dreams you've had while you were asleep?
Most of the time, my dreams are just a complete blur by the time I have my morning coffee. Occasionally, I have exceptionally vivid dreams that stay with me for the entire day, though those are typically few and far between.
How many hours do you sleep every day?
In total, I rarely exceed eight hours, including the occasional short nap I take after lunch. I have always preferred quality over quantity, so I focus more on the depth of my rest rather than spending too many hours in bed.
Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
