Tins: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. Here are 5 questions about tins written by BandLadder in the examiner's style, each with a Band 8 sample answer. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

1

Do you often buy food in tins?

Yes, quite often, actually. I always keep a few tins of chopped tomatoes and chickpeas in the kitchen cupboard because they're really convenient when I want to whip up a quick curry or pasta sauce on busy weekday evenings.

2

What kinds of canned or tinned food do you prefer?

I usually go for basic cooking ingredients like coconut milk, kidney beans, and sweetcorn rather than ready meals. I find that tinned vegetables still taste fairly fresh and hold their flavour well without being packed with artificial preservatives.

3

Did you eat much tinned food when you were a child?

I suppose we did, yeah. My mum often used tinned tuna for our packed lunches, and we'd always have tinned baked beans on toast on lazy weekend mornings. It was cheap and cheerful, and saved her a lot of cooking time.

4

Do you keep or reuse empty tins at home?

Definitely. I like to wash out decorative biscuit tins to store loose items like sewing needles, buttons, and spare keys. I've even used a couple of clean soup tins on my desk to hold pens and pencils.

5

Do you think tinned food will still be popular in the future?

To be honest, I think so. Even though people are moving towards fresh, organic produce nowadays, canned goods have a very long shelf life and are extremely affordable. That makes them hard to beat for everyday convenience.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
