1

Have you ever used a tour guide when travelling?

Yes, a few times, particularly when visiting historic ruins. I remember hiring a local guide when I went to Rome a couple of years back. She was brilliant because she pointed out little architectural details that I would have completely overlooked on my own.

2

Do you prefer exploring a new place on your own or with a guide?

It depends, but generally, I'd rather wander around independently. I like taking things at my own pace and getting slightly off the beaten track. If you're stuck in a large tour group, you tend to spend half the time waiting around for other people.

3

What makes someone a good tour guide?

I think charisma and storytelling are essential. It's not just about reeling off dates and historical facts; a great guide needs to bring the history to life and engage with their group. Having a good sense of humour definitely helps keep everyone interested, too.

4

Did you ever go on guided tours with your school as a child?

Yes, quite frequently. We used to go on class trips to natural history museums and ancient castles. To be honest, most of us were more excited about having a packed lunch on the coach than listening to the curator, but some tours were genuinely fascinating.

5

Would you ever consider working as a tour guide in the future?

I don't think so, actually. While I love meeting people from different cultures, having to be cheerful and on your feet all day long sounds exhausting. I think I'd get fed up answering the same questions day in, day out.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
