Teaching hours per year across three school levels in four countries

Overall, the U.S.A. recorded the highest teaching hours across all three educational levels, whereas Iceland generally reported the lowest figures. Furthermore, there was a clear upward trend in teaching hours as the level of education increased across all four nations.

In the U.S.A., teachers spent 650 hours at the primary level, rising significantly to 1,000 hours for lower secondary and peaking at 1,170 hours for upper secondary. Similarly, Spain showed a steady increase, starting at 650 hours for primary, reaching 750 hours for lower secondary, and finishing at 900 hours for upper secondary.

Japan followed a similar pattern, though with lower overall figures, beginning at 600 hours for primary and increasing to 700 hours for upper secondary. Iceland displayed the most dramatic disparity between levels; while primary and lower secondary teachers taught 580 and 600 hours respectively, the figure for upper secondary teachers jumped sharply to 910 hours, surpassing Spain’s primary and lower secondary totals.
