Band 8 sample answer
The provided diagram illustrates the various stages involved in the commercial production of potato chips, starting from the initial inspection of raw potatoes to the final packaging of the finished product.
Overall, the manufacturing process is a linear sequence that can be divided into three main phases: preparation, cooking, and packaging. The entire operation requires a series of mechanical interventions to transform raw potatoes into ready-to-eat chips.
In the initial stage, workers first check the quality of the potatoes before they are sent to a washer. Once cleaned, the potatoes undergo peeling, which separates the peels and starch from the main product. Subsequently, the potatoes are sliced and rinsed with cold water. Before cooking, the slices are subjected to an air-drying process to remove excess moisture.
Following preparation, the potato slices are moved via a flat bed conveyor into a deep fryer. Once fried, the chips pass through a salter to add flavour. Finally, the finished chips are transported along a flat belt conveyor to the packaging area. Depending on the desired format, the chips are either processed through a bag packer or directed into a bulk can filler, completing the production cycle.

How to write about process diagrams
- Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends.
- Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally.
- Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.

Frequently asked questions
What should the overview say?
The production of potato chips is a multi-stage industrial process that begins with quality control and raw material preparation, followed by thermal processing and final packaging.
How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?
At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.
How do I describe process diagrams?
Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
