High executive salaries in corporate structures: agree or disagree

The question

Some people think that it is a good thing for senior management positions to have much higher salaries than other workers in a company. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

About 40 minutes. Write at least 250 words.

Plan before you write

Position:
I believe that while significant compensation is justified by the immense responsibilities of leadership, the current disparity is often excessive and detrimental to organisational cohesion.
Paragraph 2:
Senior managers bear the burden of high-stakes decision-making and accountability, which warrants a substantial financial premium.
Paragraph 3:
Excessive pay gaps often undermine staff morale and widen social inequality, suggesting that remuneration should be more closely linked to collective performance.
  1. State a clear position in the last sentence of the introduction and keep it to the end.
  2. Two body paragraphs that each give one reason for that position, with an example.
  3. A partial position is fine if it is stated precisely; a position that drifts is what caps task response at 6.

Band 8 sample essay

The debate regarding whether senior management should receive significantly higher remuneration than the average worker remains a contentious issue in corporate governance. While some argue that top-tier salaries are essential to attract and retain elite talent, others contend that such disparities are unjust. In my view, although executive compensation should reflect the weight of responsibility, the current scale of inequality within many firms is often unjustified.

Undoubtedly, leadership roles demand a unique set of skills and involve immense accountability, justifying a higher salary bracket. Executives are tasked with steering a company through volatile markets and making decisions that directly impact the firm's survival. For instance, a Chief Executive Officer is legally and strategically responsible for the welfare of thousands of employees and the interests of shareholders. This level of pressure and the necessity for specialised expertise warrant financial incentives that distinguish them from entry-level staff, as these roles necessitate long-term strategic vision and high-level crisis management.

Conversely, when the pay gap between leadership and the workforce becomes extreme, it frequently erodes workplace morale and fosters a culture of resentment. When employees feel that their contributions are undervalued compared to the exorbitant bonuses of their superiors, productivity and staff retention often decline. A notable example is the criticism levelled at major financial institutions where executives received massive bonuses despite poor corporate performance, which caused significant public outcry and internal dissatisfaction. Fairer compensation structures, which tie executive pay more closely to the success of the entire team, would likely create a more harmonious and sustainable corporate environment.

In summary, while high salaries for senior management are a logical consequence of their elevated responsibilities, the current trend of excessive pay gaps is problematic. Organisations should strive for a more equitable balance that recognises individual leadership contributions without sacrificing the collective morale of the workforce.
