Government influence on personal lifestyle choices: to what extent

The question

To what extent should the government influence people's lifestyle choices? Why?

About 40 minutes. Write at least 250 words.

Plan before you write

Position:
The government should only intervene in personal lifestyle choices when individual actions pose a direct and significant threat to public health or societal well-being.
Paragraph 2:
State intervention is justified when personal habits create systemic costs that burden the public healthcare infrastructure.
Paragraph 3:
Excessive government control over private matters risks infringing upon individual autonomy and personal liberty.
  1. State a clear position in the last sentence of the introduction and keep it to the end.
  2. Two body paragraphs that each give one reason for that position, with an example.
  3. A partial position is fine if it is stated precisely; a position that drifts is what caps task response at 6.

Band 8 sample essay

The degree to which a state should regulate the private lives of its citizens remains a contentious issue. While some argue that personal freedom should be absolute, I believe that government intervention is necessary when individual choices impose substantial negative externalities on the broader community.

Public health serves as the primary justification for government involvement in lifestyle choices. When individuals engage in habits that lead to widespread chronic illnesses, the financial and operational strain on national health services becomes unsustainable. For instance, many countries have successfully implemented taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages to combat rising obesity rates. By incentivising healthier consumption patterns through fiscal policy, the state protects its citizens from preventable diseases while simultaneously reducing the long-term economic burden on public medical facilities.

Conversely, overstepping these boundaries can lead to an intrusive culture that erodes personal agency. People should retain the right to make decisions about their own bodies and daily routines, provided these actions do not harm others. If the government were to mandate specific exercise regimes or strictly govern dietary intake, it would represent an unacceptable overreach into private life. For example, while smoking bans in public spaces are widely accepted because they protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke, regulating what individuals do within their own homes would be a violation of civil liberties that far outweighs any potential collective health benefits.

In summary, there is a clear distinction between public safety and private preference. The state must carefully balance its responsibility to maintain a healthy society with the fundamental right of individuals to govern their own lives. Only through targeted, evidence-based measures that address clear societal risks can governments influence lifestyle choices without sacrificing the essential principles of personal freedom.

Why this scores Band 8

The essay achieves Band 8 by clearly defining the boundary between justifiable public health intervention and unacceptable state overreach with logical, well-supported arguments. A Band 6 response typically fails by providing a superficial, one-sided argument or by relying on clichéd generalisations without specific, relevant examples.
