Practice PTE Academic →The score each destination needs
| Route | PTE | IELTS equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom: Skilled Worker, degree-level study | PTE Academic UKVI 59 each | IELTS for UKVI 5.5 each (B2) |
| Australia: Competent English (skilled visa eligibility) | PTE 47 / 48 / 51 / 54 (L/R/W/S) | IELTS 6.0 each |
| Australia: Proficient English (+10 points) | PTE 58 / 59 / 69 / 76 | IELTS 7.0 each |
| Canada: Express Entry CLB 7 | PTE Core L60 · R60 · W69 · S68 | IELTS General 6.0 each |
Australia's thresholds are per skill for tests from 7 August 2025: Competent 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, 54 speaking; Proficient 58 / 59 / 69 / 76 for 10 points; Superior 69 / 70 / 85 / 88 for 20. Canada does not accept PTE Academic for Express Entry: PTE Core CLB 7 is listening 60, reading 60, writing 69, speaking 68. UK visas need 59 in each skill for B2. The United States sets no IELTS or PTE score for the student visa: each university sets its own, and some do not accept PTE at all.
What universities ask for
Each university sets its own English score, and some do not take PTE at all. Universities we checked on their official pages:
| University / level | PTE Academic | IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| University of Cape Town (South Africa) | PTE Academic 67, at least 59 in each communicative skill | IELTS Academic 6.5, at least 6.0 in each component |
| University of Melbourne (Australia), English Level 1 | PTE Academic 64, at least 60 in each skill | IELTS 6.5, at least 6.0 in each skill |
| University of Toronto (Canada), undergraduate | PTE Academic 65, no part below 60 | IELTS Academic 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| Arizona State University (US), first-year, most majors | PTE Academic 53 | IELTS 6.0 |
UCT's results must be no more than two years old. Melbourne gives every course an English level on its course page; Level 1 is the lowest in its table. Toronto accepts IELTS Online and UKVI sittings of both tests, but not One Skill Retake, and wants every IELTS score from a single test date. ASU asks more for some colleges: engineering is IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58, and its nursing degree does not accept PTE.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take PTE in Somalia?+
No. Pearson's price finder does not list Somalia, so there is no centre to book in the country.
Where is the nearest PTE centre to Mogadishu?+
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (USD 250) or Kenya (USD 260), which has two centres in Nairobi, one in Mombasa and one in Uasin Gishu.
IELTS or PTE for Somali candidates?+
Both run in Nairobi and Addis Ababa. In Kenya IELTS costs KES 41,580 and PTE USD 260. UCT asks PTE 67 for the same entry that is IELTS 6.5, so compare the targets, not only the fees.
Does Canada accept PTE from Somalia?+
For Express Entry, only PTE Core, not PTE Academic. CLB 7 is listening 60, reading 60, writing 69 and speaking 68. Universities decide for study: McGill accepts PTE Academic 65 for undergraduate entry but not for graduate programmes.
