What is General Linguistic Range in the PTE essay?
General Linguistic Range (GLR) is one of the traits that score Write Essay in PTE Academic. It asks one question of your whole essay: can you say what you mean, precisely, without your English getting in the way? It is not a count of difficult words. A writer who uses plain words to draw exact distinctions scores higher than one who scatters rare words that blur the point.
The July 2025 Score Guide scales General Linguistic Range 0–6, the same width as Content, so it is one of the biggest levers in the essay. PTE Core has no Write Essay, so this sheet is about PTE Academic.
The three things the descriptors judge
| What is judged | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Variety | You express ideas in different ways rather than repeating one pattern. Level 3 describes “simple expressions are used repeatedly”. |
| Ease and precision | You say the exact thing, not something near it. Level 6 is ideas formulated “with ease and precision”. |
| Clarity despite errors | Errors matter when they blur meaning. At level 6 meaning is completely clear; at level 2 errors cause frequent breakdowns. |
Paraphrased from the General Linguistic Range descriptors, PTE Academic Score Guide (July 2025) pp. 38–39.
Nothing in the GLR descriptors mentions advanced or rare vocabulary. The words that recur are variety and clear, and the top level adds precision. The rest of this sheet shows what precision looks like, how GLR differs from Vocabulary Range, and five moves that lift it. For the essay's place among all the writing tasks, see PTE Writing 79.

Questions
FAQ
What is General Linguistic Range in the PTE essay?+
It is a Write Essay trait, scored 0–6, that judges how freely and precisely you can express your ideas: variety of expression, exactness, and whether errors blur meaning (PTE Academic Score Guide, July 2025, pp. 38–39).
What is the difference between General Linguistic Range and Vocabulary Range in PTE?+
General Linguistic Range (0–6) asks whether you can formulate any idea clearly and exactly. Vocabulary Range (0–2) asks how broad your word stock is for the topic.
Do difficult words improve General Linguistic Range?+
Not by themselves. The descriptors reward variety and precision; a rare word used loosely makes meaning less clear, which is what the trait penalises.
Is General Linguistic Range checked by a human?+
Yes. The Score Guide says Write Essay includes an expert review of Content, Development, Structure and Coherence, and General Linguistic Range (p. 15).
Is General Linguistic Range scored in PTE Core?+
PTE Core has no Write Essay task, and its Write Email scoring does not list General Linguistic Range. This trait matters for PTE Academic.
Can I use a memorised essay template to show range?+
Avoid it. The Score Guide says a response that does not deal properly with the prompt because of significant pre-prepared or memorised material scores 0 for Content, and then earns no score points (p. 8).
