PTE Writing score contribution: which tasks count?
Your Writing score is not an essay score. Pearson counts several tasks towards Writing, some in the Listening part, and the list differs between PTE Academic and PTE Core.
Every task that feeds Writing
| Task | Part of the test | PTE Academic | PTE Core |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summarize Written Text | Part 1 | 2 items · Reading and Writing | 1–2 items · Reading and Writing |
| Write Essay | Part 1 | 1 item · Writing | Not in PTE Core |
| Write Email | Part 1 | Not in PTE Academic | 2–3 items · Writing |
| Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks | Part 2 Reading | Reading only | 5–6 items · Reading and Writing |
| Summarize Spoken Text | Part 3 Listening | 1 item · Listening and Writing | 1–2 items · Listening and Writing |
| Listening: Fill in the Blanks | Part 3 Listening | Listening only | 2–3 items · Listening and Writing |
| Write from Dictation | Part 3 Listening | 3–4 items · Listening and Writing | 3–4 items · Listening and Writing |
PTE Academic Score Guide (July 2025) pp. 32, 34, 40, 41, 44; PTE Core Score Guide (January 2026) pp. 31, 32, 35, 36, 38.
Count the items. In PTE Academic, Writing rests on 7–8 items, nearly half of them Write from Dictation sentences. In PTE Core it is 14–20 items, 7–9 of them from the two Fill in the Blanks tasks. Items are not points and Pearson publishes no weights, but with so few Academic items, a single zero shows.
So the route to 79 has an order: make zeros impossible, stop losing single points to spelling, then make your content specific. The overall score is not an average of the skill scores (Academic guide p. 6), and institutions set their own minimums (p. 9). The full scale is on the PTE score chart.

Questions
FAQ
How do I get 79 in PTE Writing?+
Make Form errors impossible first, then stop losing single points to spelling, then build specific, well-organised content. Train every task that feeds Writing, including Write from Dictation. No method guarantees a score; a mock test shows which task holds you back.
Which questions contribute to the PTE Writing score?+
PTE Academic: Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation. PTE Core: Summarize Written Text, Write Email, Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Summarize Spoken Text, Listening Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation (score guides, July 2025 and January 2026).
What is the PTE Writing score distribution?+
Pearson does not publish task weights. The score guides give item counts: 7–8 Writing items in PTE Academic and 14–20 in PTE Core, with Write from Dictation 3–4 items in both.
Why is my PTE Writing score low when my essay is good?+
The essay is one of 7–8 Writing items in PTE Academic. The rest are summaries and dictation, where a word count, two full stops or a misspelt word cost points, and a Form 0 means no points for that item.
What IELTS score is PTE Writing 79?+
There is no exact equivalent. Pearson's July 2025 alignment table places PTE Writing 77–84 beside IELTS 7.5, as an estimate (PTE Academic Score Guide p. 12).
Is there a template for PTE Writing 90?+
Use structures, not templates. Pearson scores Content 0 for responses built on significant pre-prepared or memorised material, and a Content 0 means no points for the item (Academic guide p. 8; Core guide p. 6).
