Carnegie Mellon's Duolingo rules

Heinz College accepts the current 160-point DET with subsection scores and wants results sent directly to "Carnegie Mellon University – Heinz College of Information Systems & Public Policy". The School of Computer Science asks you to use the same email as your application, send to "Carnegie Mellon University – Graduate Computer Science Programs" and make sure subscores are included.

Computer Science accepts English scores no older than two years and rejects tests taken before 1 September 2024. Applicants studying for or holding a US bachelor's or master's degree may submit an expired score up to five years old (not before 1 September 2021), except for MCDS and MHCI, which require a test within two years.

For comparison, the undergraduate page requires IELTS 7.5 overall, and ECE requires IELTS 7 with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6 and Writing 6.

If your Duolingo score is below Carnegie Mellon's level

None of these pages offers conditional admission or a pathway programme. The School of Computer Science says it issues no waivers to non-native speakers, including on the basis of earlier study in English, and does not accept medium of instruction certificates. Undergraduates can add an optional InitialView or Vericant interview, but it does not replace the test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Carnegie Mellon programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
