MIT Duolingo minimums by level
From MIT Admissions' tests and scores page and the Office of Graduate Education's English language proficiency page. For first-year applicants, MIT strongly recommends an English test if you have used English for fewer than five years or do not speak it at home or at school.
| Level or programme | Duolingo minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First-year undergraduate | 120 minimum, 125 recommended | Self-reported on the application, verified on enrolment |
| Graduate (GradAdmissions general figure) | 135 recommended minimum | Accepted by a limited number of departments only |
| Graduate (your department) | Set by the department | Department minimums supersede the GradAdmissions figure |
How MIT handles Duolingo scores
Undergraduates do not send official scores with the application. You self-report every full sitting, including future sittings, and MIT verifies scores when you enrol. If you take the same test more than once, MIT says it primarily considers the highest score in each section.
Graduate applicants self-report on the application's Test Scores page, and the score must then be verified by the test provider, Duolingo included, before your department's verification deadline. Scores that will be invalid by the application deadline are not accepted, and MIT suggests testing at least two months before the deadline.
For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at a minimum of 7 (7.5 recommended), and the graduate page recommends IELTS Academic 7 overall.

If your Duolingo score is below MIT's level
Neither page offers conditional admission or a pathway programme for a low score. At graduate level, applicants who do not qualify for an automatic exemption can ask their department for an English test waiver, which is granted on demonstrated fluency under each department's own criteria. If your department does not accept DET, you will need IELTS, TOEFL or, where accepted, Cambridge.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your MIT programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
