Tests Home Affairs accepts
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs accepts scores from the tests below when taken at a secure test centre (Home Affairs). The Duolingo English Test is not on the list. Home Affairs adds that it does not accept English tests "delivered completely online", and DET is taken online at home (DET).
| Accepted test | Note |
|---|---|
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | |
| CELPIP General | CELPIP Online is not accepted |
| IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training | Including One Skill Retake; IELTS Online not accepted |
| LanguageCert Academic | LanguageCert Academic Online not accepted |
| Michigan English Test (MET) | Including Single Section Retake; MET Digital at home not accepted |
| OET | OET@Home not accepted |
| PTE Academic | |
| TOEFL iBT | Register under 'Taking TOEFL for Australia'; Home Edition not accepted |
Student visas and university admission
Duolingo says more than 6,500 institutions accept DET (DET), mostly for admission. But an offer letter that accepts DET does not change what Home Affairs accepts as visa evidence, and the level you need depends on your visa subclass (Home Affairs). If your visa asks for a test score, plan for one of the tests above.
Home Affairs groups requirements into functional, vocational, competent, proficient and superior English, each with minimum scores per test (Home Affairs). See IELTS for the Australian student visa and IELTS for skilled visas.

If you already took DET
A DET result is still useful for universities that accept it, and it stays valid for two years (DET help centre). For the visa, PTE Academic and IELTS are both on the Home Affairs list (Home Affairs). You can take a PTE mock test for Australia or a free IELTS mock test to check your level first.
