What IELTS score do you need for Efrei?

Efrei, the Paris-region engineering school, asks every applicant whose first language is not English for evidence of English: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80 (550 paper-based) or TOEIC 750. The page gives one standard for all applicants, with no band minimums and no programme-by-programme differences. English-taught programmes need no French test.Source: Efrei official English requirements · checked 4 November 2026

What the page does not say

The page does not mention PTE or Duolingo, does not describe a waiver for an English-medium degree, and does not say how long a result stays valid. If you hold a test other than the four above, or rely on your previous degree being taught in English, ask Efrei admissions before you apply.

The master's application page lists the documents for entry: results of an official English test, a CV in English, original certified transcripts, a cover letter and a recommendation letter. It names Bachelor of Computer Science, Telecommunication and Network Engineering and Software Engineering as qualifying degrees, and gives 15 May as the application deadline.

French requirements and checking your offer

For English-taught programmes there is no requirement for a French test, but Efrei highly recommends learning French before you arrive. French-taught programmes need DELF B2, TEF 550 or TCF 400, and only applicants with an excellent academic profile may start a French-taught programme at B1.

Chinese high school students with B1 French can be pre-admitted to the first year of the engineering diploma if they spend a year at the École Étoile de Langues to reach B2.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Efrei programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Efrei publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
