Graduate: IELTS 7, and the MOI route for India
Scores stay valid for two years from the test date and must not expire before your term starts, though a score expiring within three months of the start does not need a retake. TOEFL Home Edition and IELTS Indicator are accepted; TOEFL MyBest, TOEFL Essentials, IELTS General Training, Duolingo and PTE are not. Programs may require more. From Fall 2027 admission, citizenship alone no longer satisfies the requirement.
A post-secondary degree from an approved country, such as Australia, Canada, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Singapore or the UK, meets the requirement; India is not on the list. A degree where English was the sole official language of instruction also counts, shown by a transcript notation or a Medium of Instruction certificate, as does a US degree. See the FAQ.

Georgia Tech's undergraduate pages state no scores of their own; they require one of the USG approved methods. The USG minimums are TOEFL 3.5 (69 before 2026), IELTS 6, PTE Academic 53, SAT Reading and Writing 480 or ACT English 17, and institutions may set higher scores. Georgia Tech welcomes Duolingo only as a supplementary material, which does not satisfy the requirement. See international first-year.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Georgia Tech sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Georgia Tech graduate English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
