What PTE score do you need for HKUST?

The list names "Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)" and gives only the overall and sub-score floor. It does not say whether PTE Academic Online or PTE Core is accepted, how old a score may be, or how to send it. Send the score through your Pearson account and confirm with HKUST admissions that it has arrived before the deadline.

On the same list, IELTS Academic needs 6.0 overall with no band minimum stated, and TOEFL iBT needs a total of 80 (or 4.5 for tests from 21 January 2026) in one sitting. PTE 64 with every sub-score at 60 or above is a tighter target than the IELTS line, because one weak skill on PTE fails the requirement.

This guide covers undergraduate entry only. Postgraduate English requirements are set separately by the HKUST Graduate School, so check its admission requirements page before relying on PTE for a master's or research degree.

The list accepts many school-leaving English results instead of a test, for example HKDSE English Level 3, GCE AS or A-Level English Grade E, IB English B (Higher Level) Grade 4 and MUET Band 4. If one PTE sub-score is under 60, one of these routes or another accepted test may suit you better than a retake. The list does not describe a conditional offer or pathway programme with a PTE entry point.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your HKUST programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
