IELTS fees in Ghana by provider

Figures come from IDP's live session lists for Accra and Kumasi, and from the British Council's UKVI page and its booking system. Neither lists tax separately. Paper-based IELTS is no longer offered in Ghana; the paper option is IELTS on computer with Writing on paper.

The gap on IELTS for UKVI is worth GHS 800, so if you need UKVI for a UK visa, compare both providers before booking. IELTS Online (Academic only, at home) is offered by the British Council, but it did not publish a Ghanaian price, and it says immigration authorities do not accept IELTS Online.

Which test nurses and care workers need

For a UK Health and Care Worker or Skilled Worker visa, the British Council lists the requirement as CEFR B2: at least 5.5 in each of the four parts of IELTS for UKVI (British Council). B1 still applies to people already on those routes before 8 January 2026 who are only extending. Our Skilled Worker visa guide covers the details.

If you are a nurse or midwife heading for the UK, book IELTS Academic (or IELTS for UKVI Academic) at a test centre. The Nursing and Midwifery Council says it does not accept IELTS Online or One Skill Retake, because all four skills must be tested in one sitting (NMC). Our IELTS for nurses in the UK guide has the scores.

Transfer, cancellation and refund rules

IDP and the British Council use the same deadlines for standard IELTS in Ghana (IDP policy, British Council policy). Both accept special-consideration cases (illness, bereavement and similar) up to two calendar days after the test. The British Council pays approved refunds by bank transfer, not mobile money, within 21 days of a complete application, to an account in the name you registered with (mobile money FAQs).

IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills follow a separate British Council policy: cancel more than 14 days ahead and you get 75% back, within 14 days but more than two days ahead 50%, within two days 25%, and nothing on or after test day. A UKVI booking can be transferred once, more than 14 days ahead, to a date within three months, and the centre may charge up to 25%. (British Council UKVI policy). How to pay for IELTS in Ghana

The British Council takes debit or credit cards and mobile money in its online booking, or a bank payment at any Standard Chartered branch in Ghana with its virtual account deposit slip. Online payments confirm instantly; bank payments within two working days. Ghanaians can use a passport or a national ID card issued by the National Identification Authority; non-Ghanaians need a passport and, for bookings made after 10 December 2024, proof of residence (British Council).

IDP asks for a clear colour scan or photo of your passport and card payment online, or you can register at a local IDP branch (IDP). Every attempt costs the full fee, so practise free before you pay.
