Transfer, cancellation and refund rules

Sri Lanka is one of the few markets where the two providers' rules differ sharply. IDP lets you transfer once per booking to a date within 3 months, and for IELTS on computer it refunds the fee minus a 25% admin fee if you cancel at least 5 days before the test (IDP policy). The British Council refunds 75% only if you cancel 15 or more days ahead, and nothing within 14 days (British Council policy).

IDP's UKVI and Life Skills tests need 14 days' notice for a transfer (LKR 15,000 for UKVI, LKR 10,000 for Life Skills) and refund on a sliding scale. The British Council's UKVI tests follow a separate policy page. See our IELTS cancel, reschedule and refund guide for the global rules.

How to pay for IELTS in Sri Lanka

IDP takes Visa or Mastercard online or cash at an IDP office, and a booking goes on hold if you do not pay within two days (IDP). The British Council takes cards online, offers easy payment plans on credit cards, and accepts offline payment only by online bank transfer, not EasyPay, ATM or cash deposit machines; unclaimed deposits are not refunded after 30 days (British Council).

You cannot switch test types on a transfer at the British Council, so choose between standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI carefully before paying. Then practise free before you pay the fee.
