Single sitting, validity and exemptions

All four skills must have been tested in one session, except for official combined score reports from the test provider such as TOEFL iBT MyBest Scores and IELTS One Skill Retake. An overall score on its own is not accepted.

Results are valid for two years from the test date. If they are valid when you submit your application, the CRTO treats them as valid for the rest of the registration process. You send a copy of the score report with your initial application and pay for the test yourself.

On its registration requirements page the CRTO says you meet the language requirement without a test if your first language is English or French, or if your respiratory therapy programme was taught in English or French.

Other registration steps

Graduates of programmes outside Canada need a course-by-course credential evaluation from an Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services of Canada member (for example WES, ICAS or ICES) sent directly to the CRTO, and may need further education, remediation or supervised practice. Where applicable, an application for a General Certificate must include your Health Professionals Testing Canada (formerly CBRC) respiratory therapy exam results letter. Regulators change these rules, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current scores on the CRTO page before you book a test.
