What VETASSESS assesses
For professional and general occupations, VETASSESS assesses your qualification (its comparability to the Australian Qualifications Framework and its relevance) and your employment (whether it is at the right skill level). Its eligibility page asks for colour scans of your documents and, if they are not issued in English, scans of the originals plus English translations "made by a registered translation service". The professionals FAQ says the same and adds that VETASSESS may contact you "to clarify information in your application, and to discuss your occupational skills".
Even the occupation built around English, Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Group A), is assessed on qualifications such as a TESOL degree or CELTA and on employment. Its pathways set no IELTS score.
English requirements by VETASSESS assessment type
"Not stated" means the VETASSESS pages we read do not mention an English test for that assessment. VETASSESS does not say whether interpreters are allowed in trade interviews; ask before you book if that matters to you.
| Assessment type | What VETASSESS checks | English test required by VETASSESS |
|---|---|---|
| Professional and general occupations | Qualification level and relevance, plus employment at the right skill level | Not stated; translations of non-English documents required |
| Trades: TSS skills assessment (482 visa) | Documentary evidence, then a practical assessment and/or technical interview | Not stated |
| Trades: Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) | Documentary evidence, then a practical assessment and/or technical interview | Not stated |
| DAMA occupations | Same process as standard assessments, with DAMA-specific criteria for some occupations | Not stated; VETASSESS notes DAMAs may give English language concessions for some occupations |

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Trades: interviews are done by VETASSESS, not by an English test
On the trade occupations page, Pathway 1 (no Australian qualification or licence) leads to "a practical assessment and/or technical interview", and Pathway 2 (with an Australian qualification or licence) to a technical interview. The trades FAQ covers documents not in English (translate them) but sets no test score.
If your English test result is close to expiring, VETASSESS's Priority Processing aims to finish an assessment in 10 business days for an extra $863.00, after an eligibility check of up to 2 business days.
The English you need for the visa
Home Affairs sets the visa English. For the 189, 190 and 491 visas, the minimum is Competent English, and higher levels earn points; IELTS Academic and General Training count the same (re-read on the Competent, Proficient and Superior pages, 6 October 2026). Trade workers going to the 482 visa face a different, lower standard: see our 482 visa guide.
Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the Home Affairs English language page before you book a test or apply. This guide restates that page as read on 6 October 2026; it is not migration advice.
| Home Affairs level | IELTS in each of the 4 skills | Points-tested visa effect |
|---|---|---|
| Competent English | 6 | Minimum when invited for 189, 190 and 491 (0 points) |
| Proficient English | 7 | 10 points |
| Superior English | 8 | 20 points |
