Acceptance is the same for most students
Australia lists both IELTS and PTE Academic (Home Affairs); the UK approves IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI as SELTs (GOV.UK); INZ accepts IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 for skilled residence (INZ); and Canada PR needs IELTS General Training, PTE Core or CELPIP-General (IRCC), with CELPIP at USD 200 in Dhaka (CELPIP). Nurses heading to the UK, Ireland or New Zealand cannot use PTE (NMC, NMBI, NCNZ).
Score levels line up on Pearson's concordance: IELTS 6.0 sits at PTE 47–54, 6.5 at 55–62 and 7.0 at 63–70 (Pearson). Universities still publish their own PTE minimum, so check it rather than converting; our PTE to IELTS converter shows both official tables.

Choose PTE if… / choose IELTS if…
Choose PTE if you live in Dhaka, Chattogram or Sylhet, are not a nurse, and value results in about two days and the stronger refund. Pearson's rules are the same in every country: free rescheduling while more than 14 full calendar days remain, a 100% refund if you cancel more than 14 days ahead, 50% between 14 and more than 7 days, and nothing at 7 days or fewer (Pearson).
Choose IELTS if you live elsewhere, want to pay in taka with bKash or 0% instalments (British Council), need a UK visa test with more approved centres, or want One Skill Retake. Book with whichever IELTS provider has the date you need; see IDP vs British Council.
Frequently asked questions
I live in Rajshahi and need a test for a UK master's. Is PTE available near me?+
No. PTE runs only in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet. IDP and the British Council both offer IELTS in Rajshahi at BDT 31,100.
Is PTE cheaper than IELTS in Bangladesh?+
It depends on the exchange rate. PTE is priced at USD 220 and IELTS at BDT 31,100, so compare the taka amount your card will be charged on the day.
Can I pay the PTE fee with bKash in Bangladesh?+
Pearson takes card payment in US dollars. bKash is accepted by the British Council for IELTS.
Which test should a nurse in Dhaka take for registration in the UK?+
IELTS Academic or OET. The NMC says these are the only tests it can accept.
If my test is 10 days away and I have to cancel, which refunds more?+
PTE refunds 50% between 14 and more than 7 days before the test. IELTS refunds nothing within 14 days at either provider in Bangladesh.
