Waivers for Indian degrees, and undergraduates

India is not on Engineering's list of countries where English is the official language, but Engineering has a language-of-instruction waiver: a bachelor's or master's from a school where the sole or primary language of instruction, writing and testing is English, confirmed by a certificate or letter. Carey exempts degrees where English was the only language of instruction, shown on the university website, transcript or mark sheets.

Undergraduates are recommended, not required, to submit TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge if English is not their primary language or they have not attended an English-language school for the last three years. Competitive scores are TOEFL 5, IELTS 7.0 in each band, Duolingo 120 or Cambridge 185. See standardized testing.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Johns Hopkins sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Johns Hopkins Engineering English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
