English 6: the requirement behind every KTH programme
KTH's entry requirements for master's studies ask for English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6/English Level 2, and say you can meet it "for example" with an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 4.5. Programme pages such as the MSc in Computer Science repeat the same wording. KTH sends you to University Admissions in Sweden for the full list of tests.
The bachelor's page for Information and Communication Technology is more specific: IELTS 6.5 with no section below 5.5, TOEFL 90 with 20 in writing for results up to 20 January 2026, or TOEFL 4.5 with no section below 4 for results from 21 January 2026.
These are the English 6 scores on Universityadmissions.se, the national service that handles applications to KTH:

| IELTS Academic (also IELTS Online, UKVI Academic, One Skill Retake) | 6.5 overall, no section below 5.5 |

How your test is checked
University Admissions accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI (Academic) and IELTS One Skill Retake (Academic), but not General Training or IELTS Indicator. It verifies your score online through the TRF number; a result it cannot verify is not accepted. It notes that IELTS results are valid for two years according to IELTS, but says it can accept older results as long as they are still available online for verification.
For TOEFL it accepts the iBT, Home Edition and Paper Edition, but not MyBest scores, ITP, Essentials or Examinee Score Records, and a TOEFL can be verified for up to two years after the test date. For PTE you must assign your result to "University Admissions in Sweden" in your Pearson account. Duolingo is not among the tests the page lists.

Universityadmissions.se lists three routes through university study: a degree with English as the main subject; 60 ECTS credits taught in English in an EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Australia, English-speaking Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the USA or some Caribbean countries; or a bachelor's degree from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. A letter from your school or university is not enough on its own, except for the 60-credit route.
Upper secondary studies from some countries also count. KTH's ICT page says Indian applicants can meet the requirement with English plus at least three other subjects taught in English, or with English on a CISCE Class XII or CBSE certificate (2008 onwards), while Chinese upper secondary studies do not meet it. Neither KTH nor University Admissions lists citizenship as a waiver.
The residence permit and your offer
KTH's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student residence permit or visa.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your KTH programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
