What IELTS score do you need for Macquarie University?

For Competent English, Macquarie also lists the new TOEFL iBT scale at 4.5 with 4 in each skill, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 180 with 169 in each, LanguageCert Academic at 67 (reading 60, writing 64, listening 57, speaking 70) and OET.

The Duolingo English Test is accepted only for the Standard Foundation Program, study abroad and exchange, and remote students for whom attending a test centre would cause hardship. Where it applies, Competent English is 125 overall. Duolingo is not accepted at the Advanced level.

Foundation and pathway levels are lower: Functional English (IELTS 5.5, 5.0 each) for the Standard Foundation Program and Vocational English (IELTS 6.0, 5.5 each) for the Diploma and Masters Qualifying Program.

Macquarie accepts results submitted with IELTS One Skill Retake. Since 1 May 2023 it no longer recognises IELTS Indicator / IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition or PTE Academic Online. TOEFL iBT tests taken between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024 are not accepted.

Unless a course says otherwise, test scores must be less than two years old at the date your course starts. If you have several tests in that period, Macquarie considers your single best test result.

You can also meet the requirement through an approved foundation program, a Macquarie University College English Language Program, or an approved EAP program from listed providers (for courses up to Competent English, completed within one year of starting).

Requirements vary by course, and Macquarie can change them between intakes. Always confirm the score on your course page before you book a test. Your student visa has its own English rules, set by the Department of Home Affairs.
