What PTE score do you need for Michigan Tech?

Michigan Tech asks for PTE 53 for undergraduate admission, and its graduate admissions FAQ gives the same PTE 53 minimum for graduate applicants. Scores must be from within two years of enrolment. Graduate admissions offer no provisional or conditional admission for missing English scores, and there is no ESL programme on campus, so plan to reach 53 before you apply.

Michigan Tech PTE minimums by level

From the undergraduate English proficiency page and the Graduate School admissions FAQ. The graduate international applicants page currently names only TOEFL and IELTS, while the FAQ lists TOEFL, IELTS or PTE, so graduate applicants relying on PTE should confirm with Graduate Admissions.

Validity, sending and the IELTS comparison

Undergraduate scores must be from within two years of the intended date of enrolment. The graduate page says scores must be dated within two years (24 months) of your intended enrolment date and that you may submit your best qualifying score from that period. The FAQ adds that if you uploaded an unofficial PTE score, you must then have it sent directly from the testing agency. No page mentions PTE Academic Online or PTE Core.

IELTS is 6.5 at both levels, with undergraduates also needing 6.0 in speaking and writing; the PTE line carries no section minimums. Duolingo is accepted only for undergraduate admission (120) and not for graduate admission.

If you fall short

Michigan Tech does not offer an ESL programme. Undergraduate applicants must show proof of English for direct admission, and the page says it does not accept English proficiency waivers, though applicants from listed countries are exempt. At graduate level, scores below the minimum are not reviewed and there is no provisional or conditional admission for missing English scores. Some graduate programmes ask for more than the university minimum, and the MBA waiver requires citizenship of the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Michigan Tech programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
