Ontario Tech English test minimums
Undergraduate scores are from Ontario Tech's English language proficiency requirements page; graduate scores are from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies English language proficiency page. Undergraduate TOEFL iBT is 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0. Graduate TOEFL for tests before 21 January 2026 is 83 for most programs, 92 for the MA in Education, EdD and MHSc, and 100 for the MBAI and MFDA.
Undergraduates can also use CAEL 70 with no sub-score below 60, Cambridge Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7 (8 for Education and Nursing). Graduate applicants can use CAEL 70 with all sub-scores at 60. The graduate page lists only CAEL, Duolingo, IELTS and TOEFL, so PTE is not listed by Ontario Tech for graduate admission.

Validity and graduate test rules
Undergraduate: the test date must be within two years of your desired start date, and results must come directly from the provider unless Ontario Tech can verify them online. Graduate: results dated more than 24 months before your application are not considered, you upload a copy of the official score after applying, and Ontario Tech may verify it.
Graduate Studies accepts only IELTS Academic and does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores or super-scoring. If you apply to both a course-based and a thesis-based program, you need a test acceptable for the thesis-based one, which rules out Duolingo. A position on IELTS One Skill Retake or IELTS Online is not stated by Ontario Tech, and graduate band minimums for IELTS are not stated.

Undergraduates are exempt after at least three years of full-time study at a secondary or post-secondary institution where the language of instruction and examination is English, not counting ESL; IB English A at grade 4 also counts. Graduate applicants are exempt after three full-time years in, or completion of, a university degree taught and examined in English, and Ontario Tech may ask for official verification. If you take an approved test anyway, its score prevails.
Applicants who meet everything except the English requirement can take Oxford International Digital Institute's online EAP course through Ontario Tech's partner page, or an EAP program at another partner institution.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
Ontario Tech's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 7 too if you graduate from "any other university program", which must also be in an eligible field of study if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. The lower CLB 5 applies only to college, polytechnic and other non-university programs. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).

Does Ontario Tech accept Duolingo?+

Does the Ontario Tech IELTS score count for the PGWP?+
No. The university's score is an admission rule on IELTS Academic. For the PGWP, IRCC asks university graduates, of degree and other university programs alike, for CLB 7 in every skill, proved with IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
