University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Oxford?

Oxford undergraduates need IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component, or PTE Academic 76 with 66 in each skill. Graduate courses sit at a standard level (IELTS 7.0, 6.5 per component) or a higher level (7.5, 7.0 per component), and Oxford's graduate test list does not include PTE. IELTS Online and One Skill Retake are not accepted.

Undergraduate English requirement at Oxford

These are the scores on Oxford's undergraduate English language and visa requirements page. All four components must come from the same test session; Oxford does not superscore. If you are made an offer, you must meet the requirement by 31 July of the year you receive it, even if your course starts the following year.

Oxford recommends the standard IELTS Academic. IELTS for UKVI (Academic) is accepted but not recommended, because it costs more and has fewer test dates. IELTS General Training and IELTS Online are not accepted. Duolingo is not on the list.

Graduate (master's and DPhil) English requirement

Each graduate course page says whether it needs the standard or the higher level. Oxford's graduate English language proficiency guide accepts only IELTS Academic (either version), TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1/C2 and the Oxford Test of English Advanced. PTE Academic does not appear. Your test must have been taken within two years of the course start date.

Oxford accepts IELTS Academic and IELTS Academic for UKVI equally, but not IELTS Online or General Training. Required scores must come from one test, not One Skill Retake. TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026 are not accepted while Oxford reviews the new format.

Near misses, pre-sessional and the visa

Graduate offer holders who narrowly miss can meet the condition through Oxford's six-week online pre-sessional course. You qualify if your result is no more than 0.5 below the overall and no more than 1.0 below in any component. That works out at IELTS 6.5 (6.0 per component) for standard-level courses and 7.0 (6.5) for higher-level courses.

For undergraduates, Oxford vouches for your English on your CAS once you meet its requirement. Its page says the test does not need to be on the Home Office SELT list, because that list applies only below degree level.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Oxford programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Frequently asked questions

Does Oxford accept PTE?+

Yes for undergraduates: PTE Academic 76 with at least 66 in each skill. PTE does not appear on Oxford's graduate list, which names only IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge C1/C2 and the Oxford Test of English.

Does Oxford accept IELTS One Skill Retake or IELTS Online?+

No. Oxford's graduate guide says scores must come from a single test rather than One Skill Retake, and both the undergraduate and graduate pages exclude IELTS Online.

Do I need IELTS for UKVI for Oxford?+

No. Oxford accepts it but recommends the standard IELTS Academic, which is cheaper and easier to book. UKVI's SELT requirement applies only below degree level.

7.0 overall with 6.5 in each component for standard-level courses, or 7.5 with 7.0 in each for higher-level courses. Your course page says which applies.
