Plymouth State IELTS levels
From the undergraduate and graduate international student pages. The undergraduate page says applicants who reach these scores enter their academic degree programme directly.
| Programme | IELTS | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.0, no band less than 6.0 | TOEFL paper 530 or online 71; Duolingo 100 |
| Graduate | 6.5 overall | TOEFL 80 internet-based (550 paper, 213 computer); PTE Academic 58; ELS level 112 |
Graduate programmes open to international students
The graduate page lists the programmes open to international applicants: the MBA in General Management (on-campus cohort only), MS in Applied Meteorology, MS in Applied Exercise Physiology and Human Performance, MS in Athletic Training, MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, MEd in School Counseling, EdS in School Psychology, EdD in Learning, Leadership and Community, EdD in Higher Education and the DPT in Physical Therapy.
The graduate page carries a note that applicants to the programme are required to take the TOEFL as proof of English proficiency, while also listing IELTS 6.5, ELS level 112 and PTE Academic 58. The two statements sit side by side, so confirm with the graduate office whether IELTS is accepted for your programme.

Waivers, conditional acceptance and how to check
The undergraduate page says that if you come from a country where English is not the primary language you must give evidence of English proficiency, and that waivers are considered case by case. A conditional acceptance is issued if you meet the acceptance criteria. You then provide the International Financial Certification Form and notarised bank statements.
The undergraduate application deadline shown for fall is April 1.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Plymouth State programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Plymouth State University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
