Graduate: IELTS 6.5, or 7.0 for funding

Applicants whose native language is not English submit official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores; those below the minimum are not eligible for direct entry admission. TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years after the test date. See international applicants.

The requirement is waived if you have, or expect, a degree from a US institution or an institution in a country where English is an official language, with the transcript, diploma or an official letter confirming English as the language of instruction. UVM does not print a country list or name India or Pakistan, so ask the Graduate College whether your degree qualifies; applicants who believe they are eligible can submit supporting documents for review.

Undergraduate: IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 110

Undergraduate minimums are Duolingo 110, TOEFL 80 of 120 or 4.5 of 6, IELTS 6.5, ACT English 22, SAT EBRW 550 or Cambridge English 180. UVM does not accept MyBest TOEFL scores, and students scoring 80–89 on the TOEFL (4.5 on the new test) or equivalent are enrolled in an ESOL course in their first semester. See international how to apply.

Admissions may waive the test case by case after three or more years at a US institution or an English-medium school. See the undergraduate catalogue.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UVM sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UVM Graduate College international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
