What IELTS score do you need for the University of Maine?

Official scores are required from international applicants unless you received a degree from an English-speaking institution. The minimums are TOEFL 82, IELTS 6.5, PTE 65 and Duolingo 115, with teaching assistant minimums of TOEFL 98, IELTS 7, PTE 75 and Duolingo 130. UMaine suspended PTE Academic Online scores from 28 August 2023. See graduate test scores.

The Graduate School FAQ says no exam is needed if your undergraduate or master's degree was taught in English or if English is an official language of your home country, and that unofficial scores are enough to apply. India is not named either way, so check with the Graduate School. The MBA is stricter: scores are required unless you completed a bachelor's or master's in the US or Canada (excluding Quebec), with no other exemptions or waivers.

Undergraduate minimums are TOEFL iBT 79 before January 2026 or 4.5 after (MyBest scores accepted), TOEFL Essentials 8.5, IELTS 6.5, PTE 53, CEFR B2 or Duolingo 110. The test is waived for native speakers or those educated in English in listed countries, two or more years of non-ESL study in the US or Canada, a C or higher in English Composition at a US institution, a school letter stating that all subjects were taught in English, SAT Reading/Writing 550+ or ACT English 24+.
