PTE or IELTS for Ireland: which test should you take?

For studying in Ireland, both work: the visa minimum is IELTS 5.0 or PTE Academic 30, and most universities ask for IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 per band or PTE 63 with 59 per skill. Trinity College Dublin asks for a higher PTE, 69. For nursing, take IELTS or OET: NMBI does not list PTE. Both tests cost EUR 220 in Ireland.

The visa floor is not the real bar

The immigration page says its table is "for immigration purposes only" and that each student must meet their college's own requirement (Irish Immigration Service). In practice the university figure is the one you must hit: 6.5 IELTS or 63 PTE at most Irish universities, far above the visa's 5.0 and 30. The certificate must be issued within two years of your course start date.

Trinity is the outlier on PTE. Its Band B needs PTE 69 with 59 per section (Trinity), while Pearson's concordance places 63–70 at IELTS 7.0 (Pearson). So for Trinity, a PTE candidate needs a relatively higher score than an IELTS candidate needs for the same band. UCD also says IELTS retake scores are not accepted (UCD).

Choose PTE if… / choose IELTS if…

Choose PTE Academic if you are applying to UCD, UCC, Galway, DCU or Maynooth, where PTE 63 matches IELTS 6.5, and you want results in about two days.

Choose IELTS if Trinity is on your list (PTE 69 is a high bar), if you are a nurse or midwife (NMBI accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS for UKVI and OET only), or if you prefer a face-to-face speaking interview. Fees will not decide it: both are EUR 220 in Ireland and within INR 100 of each other in India.

Frequently asked questions

I have PTE 65 with 60 in every skill. Is that enough for a master's at Trinity College Dublin and the Irish visa?+

It clears the visa minimum of 30, but not Trinity's Band B, which needs PTE 69 with 59 in each section. UCD, UCC, Galway and DCU accept 63 with 59 per skill.

Does the Irish study visa really accept IELTS 5.0 for a degree course?+

Yes, 5.0 is the immigration minimum for degree and other main courses, but the page says your college's requirement may differ, and most universities ask for 6.5.

I'm a nurse from India moving to Ireland. Can I use PTE for NMBI registration?+

No. NMBI lists only IELTS Academic, IELTS Academic for UKVI and OET for nurses trained outside the EU, needs one sitting, and does not accept combined results or One Skill Retake.

Is PTE cheaper than IELTS if I test in Dublin?+

No difference: on 10 October 2026 PTE Academic was EUR 220 on Pearson's price finder and IELTS EUR 220 at IDP's Exam Centre of Ireland.

Can I use an IELTS One Skill Retake for UCD admission?+

No. UCD says IELTS retake scores are not accepted and the requirement must be met in a single sitting.
