PTE or IELTS for New Zealand: which test should you take?

For skilled residence and university entry, New Zealand treats PTE Academic and IELTS as equivalents: Immigration New Zealand asks for IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 overall, and universities ask for IELTS 6.0 or PTE 50 (undergraduate) and 6.5 or 58 (postgraduate). The exception is nursing: the Nursing Council does not accept PTE. In New Zealand, IELTS costs NZD 490 and PTE NZD 505.

Skilled residence: overall score only

INZ's table for the Skilled Migrant Category and other skilled residence visas sets an overall score only: IELTS 6.5 or PTE Academic 58 for the principal applicant, with no per-skill minimum for either test (INZ). The result must be no more than two years old when you apply, and at-home tests are not accepted.

On Pearson's own concordance, PTE 58 falls in the 55–62 range it links to IELTS 6.5 (Pearson), so the two bars are aligned. Because INZ uses the overall score, one weak skill does not sink you on either test; the question is only which format gets your overall higher. Details: IELTS for the Skilled Migrant Category.

Study: INZ leaves it to NZQA and your provider

INZ sets no English score for the Fee Paying Student Visa; your provider must declare you have the English to pass the course (INZ). NZQA's rules set the floor for international students at levels 3 to 10, and the universities we checked use the level 7 and level 8 figures above. NZQA wants IELTS from a single Test Report Form (One Skill Retake can be accepted) and PTE from a single score report.

Choose PTE if… / choose IELTS if…

Choose PTE Academic if you are applying for study or skilled residence, you are comfortable with computer-scored speaking, and you want results in about two days. In India its fee is INR 100 lower.

Choose IELTS if nursing registration is anywhere in your plans (the Nursing Council accepts IELTS Academic and OET only), if you want the option of One Skill Retake, which INZ and NZQA both accept, or if you do better speaking with an examiner. Inside New Zealand, IELTS is NZD 15 cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

I need 6.5 for the NZ Skilled Migrant Category but my IELTS writing is stuck at 6.0. Would PTE 58 be easier to reach?+

INZ counts only the overall score, so a 6.0 in writing does not stop you if your IELTS overall is 6.5. Compare your overall on a scored mock of each test; PTE 58 and IELTS 6.5 sit at the same level on Pearson's concordance.

I'm a nurse moving to Auckland. Can I use my PTE score of 79 for registration?+

No. The Nursing Council of New Zealand states that it does not accept PTE. It accepts IELTS Academic (7 in listening, reading and speaking, 6.5 in writing) or OET.

What PTE score do I need for a master's at the University of Auckland compared with IELTS?+

At postgraduate level, Auckland and the other universities we checked ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or PTE Academic 58 with no skill below 50. Some programmes ask for more.

Does Immigration New Zealand require IELTS or PTE for a student visa?+

No score is set on INZ's Fee Paying Student Visa page. Your provider must confirm your English, and NZQA sets the minimum providers can accept.

Can I use PTE Academic Online or IELTS Online for New Zealand residence?+

No. INZ says tests taken outside a test centre, such as at-home tests, are not accepted for skilled residence.
