Test rules and the IELTS comparison
Undergraduate and Camden graduate score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and sent directly by the testing service. The pages do not mention PTE Academic Online or PTE Core.
On the undergraduate table, IELTS needs 6.5 at New Brunswick and Newark and 6.0 at Camden, so PTE 53 covers all three campuses. Camden's graduate table pairs PTE 53 with IELTS Academic 6.5. New Brunswick graduate admissions ask for IELTS 7.

If you fall short
Undergraduates may get a waiver, reviewed case by case, if they attended an English-medium school, and a grade of B or better in a US college English Composition course also exempts them. Camden graduate applicants are exempt with a degree from an English-instruction institution, a US regionally accredited institution or an English-speaking country.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Rutgers programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
